Game Notes

Royals rally, beat the Blue Jays 6-5.

George Brett comes to the rescue as Kansas City avoids falling into an 0-3 hole against Toronto. Brett goes 4-of-4 with 2 HRs, a double and a single and scores the winning run in the bottom of the 8th as the Royals comeback from a 5-run 5th and 5-2 deficit.

After dropping the 1st 2 games in Toronto, Kansas City appeared to be ready for an answer as Brett delivers a solo HR in the 1st and then leads off the 4th with a double off the wall before scoring on Frank White's Sac Fly. Bret Saberhagen cruised through 4 innings before the wheels come off in the 5th giving up 5 runs, including a pair of 2-run HRs to Jesse Barfield and Rance Mulliniks.

Steve Farr manages to stop the bleeding and then posts 4 more scoreless innings. Doyle Alexander was unable to hold the 3-run lead for the Blue Jays. Jim Sundberg tags him for a solo HR in the bottom of the 5th and then Willie Wilson leads off the 6th with a single and scores when Brett ties it with 2-run blast to left-center.

Brett's final at-bat results in a single off Jim Clancy to lead off the 8th. After advancing to 3rd on a bunt and a groundout, Brett scores on Steve Balboni's flare that drops in to shallow center between 3 fielders.
