Game Notes

Dodgers reverse roles in a 4-1 win over the Cardinals.

Los Angeles enters with defensive liabilities against speedy St. Louis. But in the end, the Dodgers get a couple stolen bases and good base-running, while the Cardinals' defense shows leaks behind John Tudor.

Los Angeles gets the 1st run after Terry Pendleton boots a grounder by Bill Madlock, who steals 2nd and scores on Pedro Guerrero's single. In the 6th, Ozzie Smith badly misplays a grounder by Madlock into a "double". Madlock comes around to score, and then Pendleton's throw home on a bunt by Candy Maldonado hits Tudor, resulting in a 2nd run in a 3-run inning.

Meanwhile, Fernando Valenzuela weathers some shaky early innings to go 6 1/3 innings, scattering 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6.
