Game Notes

Defense, little things add up to a Cardinals' 3-1 win over the Royals.

Terry Pendleton and Tito Landrum turn in key defensive plays for St. Louis, while Buddy Biancalana fails on a critical squeeze play attempt for Kansas City. John Tudor and Todd Worrell combine to shut down the Royals, scattering 8 hits.

Kansas City takes the lead first on Steve Balboni's RBI single in the 2nd, but the Royals are unable to build on the lead when Biancalana's failed attempt to put down a bunt results in Darryl Motley being picked off on an attempted squeeze. In the 4th, Pendleton makes a catch in foul territory and then throws out Jim Sundberg attempting to tag up and score. Landrum later flags down a shot by Frank White deep in the left-center power alley with Willie Wilson on 1st as the tying run.

Danny Jackson turns in a strong effort for Kansas City, but the Cardinals are able to scratch out 2 runs against him, plating 1 when Pendlton scores on a groundout by Willie McGee in the 3rd. Cesar Cedeno doubles home the go-ahead run in the 4th.
