Game Notes

Royals roll as Cardinals meltdown in an 11-0 rout.

A night after a controversial finish forced St. Louis to a Game 7, there are no dramatics, only theatrics as Kansas City completes its rally from a 3-1 deficit in the series, becoming the 1st team to lose the 1st 2 at home and win the World Championship. Bret Saberhagen goes the distance, scattering 5 hits with no walks.

Meanwhile, St. Louis ace John Tudor struggles with control from the start, falling behind 2-0 on Daryl Motley's HR in the 2nd. An inning later, Tudor walks Jim Sundberg forcing in a run before departing. Steve Balboni follows with a 2-run single and the Royals are in control up 5-0.

Kansas City breaks the game open in the 5th as the Cardinals use 5 pitchers in the inning, giving up 6 runs, as Whitey Herzog is tossed while intervening in the 1st of 2 outbursts by Joaquin Andujar. Andujar erupts a 2nd time, only being stopped from physically attacking Don Denkinger when teammates and coaches restrain the outraged pitcher.

George Brett becomes the 5th player in World Series history to collect 4 hits in a game.
