Game Notes

Twins rally to take Game 1 from the Tigers, 8-5, after a late meltdown gives away the lead.

Minnesota appeared to be cruising along to the win behind 2 HRs by Gary Gaetti and a solid outing by Frank Viola. However, Detroit chips away at the 4-1 lead, cutting it to 4-3 when Viola works around 4 singles in the 7th to only allow 1 run. But the luck disappears in the 8th when a leadoff walk to Kirk Gibson and follow up double by Alan Trammell allows the Tigers to tie the game and then take the lead on a pair of Sac Flies.

But the Twins immediately answer, finally knocking Doyle Alexander from the game after he worked in and out of trouble throughout. Dan Gladden leads off with a single and then scores the tying run when Kirby Puckett chases Alexander with a double. Mike Henneman walks 2 straight before Willie Hernandez comes into give up the go-ahead run on a pinch-hit single by Don Baylor. Tom Brunansky doubles home 2 insurance runs.
