Minnesota rebounds from Detroit's dramatic win in Game 3 to take a 3-1 lead in the series as Frank Viola dances around trouble before Keith Atherton, Juan Berenguer and Jeff Reardon come out of the pen to slam the door with the final 12 outs. Atherton allows a pinch-hit single to Dave Bergman that cuts it to 4-3 in the 6th, but then gets a key pickoff of Darrell Evans at 3rd base by Tim Laudner to help escape further trouble.

Laudner scores an insurance run in the 8th when Evans, playing out of position at 3rd, makes a throwing error allowing him to reach base and later score. Minnesota gets 2 key long balls against Frank Tanana after falling behind 1-0 early. Kirby Puckett and Greg Gagne go deep to put the Twins in front 2-1, a lead they never relinquish.
