Game Notes

Speed lifts Cardinals to a 4-2 win over the Twins.

St. Louis uses small ball to make a big inning and take a 3-2 lead in the Series. With Bert Blyleven and Danny Cox locked in a scoreless duel, the Cardinals start their big rally with a tough hop infield single and convert it into 3 runs.

Vince Coleman starts the 6th with an infield single when the ball dies coming off the 1st base cutout. After Ozzie Smith reaches on a bunt single and both runners steal, Dan Driessen is intentionally walked with 1 out. Curt Ford then comes through with a 2-out single scoring Coleman and Smith, and Driessen later scores when Greg Gagne boots a ground ball.

Coleman then adds an insurance run in the 7th with a walk, a balk and steal of third before Smith singles. Cox makes the lead stand up going 7 2/3 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs before Ken Dayley and Todd Worrell finish off Minnesota.
