Game Notes

Twins rally for a 4-2 win over the Cardinals and 1st World Championship.

St. Louis jumps in front with 2 runs off Frank Viola in the 2nd, but a day after Minnesota battles back to force a 7th game, the Twins chip away, tying it on Kirby Puckett's RBI double in the 5th and going ahead on Greg Gagne's bases-loaded single in the 6th.

Viola recovers from the early struggles, to check the Cardinals on 6 hits for 8 innings, before Jeff Reardon pitches a perfect 9th.

St. Louis goes ahead on RBI singles by Tony Pena and Steve Lake in the 2nd. After Minnesota gets a run back against Joe Magrane in the 2nd, the Twins are stalled until the 5th when Gagne reaches on an apparent blown call at 1st base on an infield single. Danny Cox enters on 2 days rest but struggles as Puckett greets him with a double. However, Puckett is eventually thrown out attempting to steal 3rd and Gary Gaetti is later thrown out at the plate, keeping the game tied until the 6th. Minnesota adds an insurance run on Dan Gladden's 2-out RBI double in the 8th.
