Greg Maddux stops Cleveland on 2 hits, allowing just 2 unearned runs as Atlanta takes the opener. Maddux allows a 1st inning run after Kenny Lofton reaches on Rafael Belliard's error, and then steals 2nd and 3rd before scoring on a groundout. The Indians add another run when Lofton scores in the top of the 9th on a throwing error.

Orel Hershiser matches Maddux through 6 innings, allowing just 3 hits, including a solo HR by Fred McGriff. However, McGriff and David Justice lead off the 7th with walks. After Paul Assenmacher walks Mike Devereaux to load the bases before Julian Taverez enters. McGriff scores the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice and Justice scores on Belliard's bunt.
