Game Notes

Yankees win 3-2 as Red Sox curse.

Boston learns baseball is also a game of inches, and blown chances as New York is able to take a 2-0 lead in the series. The Red Sox miss a pair of HRs by a mere 2-3 inches, and the fail to score on the triple and double they're forced to settle with on the near misses.

David Cone pitches a strong 7 innings, allowing just 7 hits and a 2-run HR by Nomar Garciaparra in the 5th. The Yankees' bullpen then pitches into and out of trouble in the 8th and 9th innings.

Ramon Martinez matches Cone for much of the game, allowing just 1 run until the 7th when New York scores the critical runs. Chuck Knoblauch doubles in the tying run before Martinez departs, and then Rheal Cormier yields a single to Paul O'Neill that scores Knoblauch.
