Game Notes

Yankees beat the Red Sox 9-2 amid late dramatics.

A tight 3-2 contest erupts into chaos in the final 2 innings. A horrible out call results in a double play ending a Boston threat in the bottom of the 8th, despite Chuck Knoblauch not being close to tagging Jose Offerman.

New York responds to the big break by striking for 6 runs in the 9th, highlighted by Ricky Ledee's Grand Slam. Then things get ugly in the bottom of the 9th as Nomar Garciaparra is called out despite beating the throw to 1st base, with manager Jimmy Williams being ejected after arguing the call. Shortly after fans begin tossing debris on the field causing a delay.

Prior to the late inning mess, Andy Pettitte and Brett Saberhagen had faced off in a tight battle with Pettitte getting the better results, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing 8 hits and 2 runs. Saberhagen is solid, but his fielding error dropping a throw at first base opens the door to the Yankees' go-ahead run in the 4th.
