Game Notes

Yankees clinch with a 6-1 win over the Red Sox.

Orlando Hernandez and Ramiro Mendoza put on a clinic on the mound for New York, while Boston provides a demonstration in how to lose. Hernandez goes 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits, before allowing a leadoff HR to Jason Varitek and a double to Nomar Garciaparra.

After 3 relievers load the bases with just 1 out, Mendoza enters and slams the door holding a 4-1 lead as the Red Sox's futility with runners in scoring position continues, finishing 0-for-10. The Yankees then drive the final nail in with a 2-run HR by Jorge Posada in the 9th.

The Yankees jump on Boston early as Derek Jeter delivers a 2-run HR off Kent Mercker in the top of the 1st. New York stretches out the lead to 4-0 in the 7th inning as the Red Sox's woeful defense shows itself again with Mike Stanley letting a throw at 1st slip through his glove to allow Jeter to reach base, and then Jose Offerman boots a routine grounder, opening the door for 2 runs to score.
