New York breaks through in the 8th to take the opener. Atlanta's Greg Maddux takes a 3-hitter into the 8th but the wheels fall off after Scott Brosius leads off with a single and Darryl Strawberry follows with a walk. Brian Hunter misplays a bunt, loading the bases and then Derek Jeter singles in the tying run.

John Rocker replaces Maddux but then things get worse as Paul O'Neill singles home 2 runs and later Jim Leyritz draws a bases loaded walk.

Orlando Hernandez delivers 7 innings of 1-hit pitching, allowing just a solo HR to Chipper Jones.
