Freddy Garcia, Mariners quiet the Yankees 2-0 in the opener.

The rookie Garcia turns in a stellar performance on the big stage, holding New York to 3 hits, while striking out 8 in 6 2/3 innings. Kazuhiro Sasaki pitches into and out of danger in the 9th to preserve the shutout.

The Yankees are unable to take advantage of a better-than-expected start from Denny Neagle. Seattle puts together a 2-out rally in when Mark McLemore doubles and then scores on Rickey Henderson's single. Alex Rodriguez adds a solo HR off the leftfield foul pole in the 6th.
