Game Notes

Yankees erupt late for a 7-1 win over the Mariners.

New York breaks out of its offensive doldrums against the Seattle bullpen in the 8th. John Halama handcuffs the Yankees for 6 innings, but the 1-0 lead crumbles in the 8th. David Justice leads off with a double off Arthur Rhodes, and then New York follows with 3 straight singles and a Sac Fly for a 3-1 lead. Jose Mesa keeps the floodgates open, allowing 2 singles, a double and a HR to Derek Jeter to cap the 7-run inning.

Orlando Hernandez is able to avoid being the hard-luck loser due to the outburst. Hernandez improves to 7-0 in post-season, allowing 6 hits and 1 run over 8 innings.
