Game Notes

Its New York, New York as Yankees polish off the Mariners 9-7 to set up a Subway Series.

Orlando Hernandez weathers early-inning struggles to stay a perfect 8-0 in the post-season when Seattle's bullpen melts down after a solid start by John Halama gives the Mariners a 4-3 lead in the 7th. After Jose Paniagua gives up a pair of singles wrapped around an out in the 7th, Lou Piniella plays the percentages and gets crushed as Arthur Rhodes fails repeatedly.

David Justice greets Rhodes with a 3-run HR to center to give New York a 6-4 lead, the 1st of 3 left-handed batters Rhodes faces. Rhodes then gives up a single to Bernie Williams, and then a ground-rule double to left-handed Tino Martinez. Following a walk to Jorge Posada, Rhodes then gives up a 2-run single to left-handed Paul O'Neill before Piniella lifts Rhodes. Rhodes' record against the left-handed batters he was brought in to face: HR, double, single, 5 RBIs.

The Mariners are able to rally in the top of the 8th to cut the gap to 9-7 but Mariano Rivera finally finishes off Seattle for the Yankees' 4th pennant in 5 years.
