Hampton blanks St. Louis for 7 innings on 6 hits as New York takes the series opener. Hampton loads the bases in the 1st. but pitches out of the jam.

The Mets jump in front immediately as Timo Perez leads off with a double and then scores on Mike Piazza's double. Robin Ventura adds a Sac Fly. New York adds a run in the 5th, and then pads the lead in the 9th with a solo HR by Todd Zeile and a 2-run HR by Jay Peyton for a 6-0 edge.
