Game Notes

Mets have the answers in a 6-5 win over the Cardinals.

St. Louis rallies from 2-run deficits twice, but its New York which answers each challenge, using an error to create the winning run in the 9th. After Will Clark boots a hard grounder by Robin Ventura to start the 9th, pinch-runner Joe McEwing advances on a bunt and scores on Jay Peyton's double to center off Mike Timlin.

New York capitalizes on more miscues to get a 2-0 start when RIck Ankiel uncorks 2 wild pitches and issues 3 walks and 1 hit in just 2/3rd inning to start the game. Al Leiter cruises along with the lead until, St. Louis draws even when Edgar Renteria doubles home a run in the 5th before scoring on Fernando Tatis' double.

The Mets regain a 2-run edge when Edgar Alfonso and Todd Zeile deliver RBI singles in the top of the 8th, but the New York bullpen lets the lead slip away in the bottom of the 8th.
