After dropping the 1st 2 at home, St. Louis bounces back with an awakened offense and strong effort by Andy Benes. Benes scatters 6 hits and 2 runs over 8 innings after getting a critical double play to get out of the 1st after allowing just 1 run.

The Cardinals jump on New York starter Rick Reed from the very start as Fernando Vina leads off with a single and Edgar Renteria reaches after an error by Robin Ventura handling his bunt. Jim Edmonds singles to left scoring the pair. St. Louis tacks on 2 more runs in the 3rd and another in the 4th on Renteria's RBI single chasing Reed. Every Cardinals' starter collects at least 1 hit.
