Game Notes

Mike Hampton, Mets close out the Cardinals 7-0.

Hampton goes the distance, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8 to push New York to its 4 NL Pennant, and first since 1986. Meanwhile, the Mets get to St. Louis starter Pat Hentgen from the very start.

Timo Perez leads off with a single, steals second and scores on Edgar Alfonzo's single. After a walk by Mike Piazza, Robin Ventura follows with an RBI single as the 1st 4 batters reach base, a night after the Mets had 5 doubles from the 1st 6 batters. Piazza scores on a groundout giving New York a 3-0 lead after the 1st. The Mets stretch to 6-0 on Zeile's 3-run double in the 4th, giving Hampton ample cushion to coast along.
