Ramiro Mendoza and Mariano Rivera back a solid effort by Mike Mussina to preserve the victory. Mussina goes 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs to out-duel Seattle's Freddy Garcia. Garcia weathers a rocky 2nd, allowing 3 runs before slamming the door on New York.

Scott Brosius doubles home the 1st 2 runs before scoring on Chuck Knoblauch's single to center. Garcia then shuts down the Yankees, allowing Mike Cameron to draw the Mariners within 3-2 with a 2-run HR in the 4th. However, Seattle is unable to draw closer against Mussina and the New York bullpen.
