Game Notes

Big blast lifts Yankees to a 3-1 win over the Mariners on a quiet night.

Alfonso Soriano's 2-run HR in the 9th off Kazuhiro Sasaki breaks a 1-1 tie. The game had been scoreless with just 2 combined hits through 7 innings, until Bret Boone's solo HR in the top of the 8th starts the scoring, with Bernie Williams answering in the bottom of the inning with his own solo shot.

Roger Clemens blanks Seattle on 1 hit before departing after 5 innings, and Ramiro Mendoza keeps the Mariners hitless until Boone's HR in the 8th. Meanwhile, Paul Abbott doesn't allow a hit, but walks 8 New York batters in 5 innings before being pulled. Norm Charlton allows the Yankees their first hit in the 6th.
