Volquez and the Kansas City combine to blank Toronto on 3 hits in the series opener. Volquez goes 6 innings, allowing 2 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5. Volquez pitches out of trouble after the Blue Jays get runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs and the middle of the order coming to the plate. He strikes out Edwin Encarnacion and Troy Tulowitzki around a soft lineout to protect a 3-0 lead.

Kansas City takes the lead in the 3rd when Alex Gordon leads off with a double of Marco Estrada and then scores on Alcides Escobar's double. Escobar then scores on Lorenzo Cain's single to right. Salvador Perez extends the lead with a solo HR in the 4th.
