Oakland survives after giving up 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th when Dennis Eckersley strikes out Tony Phillips for the final out, with runners on 2nd and 3rd base. Eckersley entered with the score 7-2 and the bases loaded and struggled after striking out the first man he faced, Cecil Fielder.

Detroit jumped in front as Bobby Witt looked shaky early on, but he avoided further damage after 2 early runs. Meanwhile, after cruising through 3 innings, John Doherty broke down in the 4th, loading the bases and then yielding a Grand Slam to Mike Aldrete on a 3-0 pitch. Scott Hemond singled in another run, and then the A's tacked on additional runs in the 5th and 7th.
