St. Louis clings to a 1-0 lead before Chicago breaks through against Ken Hill to open a 2 1/2-game lead in the NL East. Hill had allowed only 1 hit through 5 innings before Ryne Sandberg leads off the 6th with a single and Dwight Smith follows with a HR for the lead.

The Cubs tack on runs in the 7th and 8th, while letting its pitching stymie the Cardinals. Steve Wilson makes a surprise start and strikes out 10 in 5 innings before departing, trailing 1-0.
