Games Notes

Cardinals avoid a sweep, beating the Cubs 7-2 on a blistering hot day.

John Stuper overcomes the heat to go 8 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits before running out of gas in the 9th. After yielding a solo HR to Leon Durham in the 2nd that ties it 1-1, Stuper is in command.

St. Louis gets great results from its speed and running game, led by Lonnie Smith, who goes 2-for-3, with a walk, a HBP, 2 stolen bases, and 4 runs. After being walked in the 1st, Smith steals second and scores on Dane Iorg's double, then turns an HBP into another stolen base and run on Keith Hernandez's triple to break the 1-1 tie in the 3rd.
