Mark McGwire hits a laser over the fence in the leftfield corner on the 1st pitch he sees from Steve Trachsel in the 4th inning, for his 62nd HR of the season, surpassing Roger Maris' MLB record for homers in a season. McGwire had tied the mark a day earlier.

Sammy Sosa comes up empty in his attempt to keep pace, with just a 1st-inning single. Chicago comes up empty in its bid to keep pace in the Wildcard chase, as Ray Lankford's 3-run HR in the 6th breaks a 2-2 tie. Ron Gant follows with a solo HR to cap a 5-run inning.
