Bob Welch, Dodgers quiet the Cubs 3-1.

Los Angeles avoids a sweep as Welch is in top form on a day when the wind is blowing in at Wrigley Field. Welch goes the distance, scattering 7 hits and striking out 9. Chicago breaks up Welch's shutout in the 8th when Shawon Dunston leads off with a triple and scores on Jerry Mumphrey's pinch-hit single. The Cubs attempt a rally in the 9th when the 1st 2 batters reach base but the hopes die with 3 straight outs.

Jamie Moyer's changeup nearly matches Welch, but the Dodgers get timely hits where the Cubs failed. Mariano Duncan singles in the 1st run in the 3rd. Bill Madlock leads off the top of the 8th with a HR and Franklin Stubbs later adds an RBI single.
