Gary Lavelle walks Leon Durham with the bases loaded, his 3rd walk of the 9th to hand Chicago the victory. Ivan DeJesus had led off the inning with a single, before a bunt, an intentional walk, and then another walk to Bill Buckner load the bases.

San Francisco had built a 3-0 in the 4th, highlighted by Enos Cabell's 2-run HR off Randy Martz. The Cubs rallied with 5 runs combined off Ed Whitson in the 5th and 6th. However, the Giants rally to tie it with solo HRs by Darrell Evans and Jeff Leonard off Bill Caudill.
