Giants rally late to beat the Padres 8-7.

San Francisco scores 3 in the bottom of the 8th to beat San Diego and reduce its Magic Number to clinch the NL West to 4. The wheels fall off in the 8th for San Diego after it had rallied from down 4-1 to lead 7-5.

After J.T. Snow leads off the 8th with a walk, Jay Witasick inherits the lead but fails after retiring the first batter he faces. A 4-pitch walk is followed by RBI singles by Edgardo Alfonzo and Benito Santiago. Rightfielder Gary Matthews Jr. catches Marquis Grissom's fly ball for the 2nd out, but thinks its the 3rd and leaves him unable to prevent Pedro Feliz from advancing to 3rd base. Witasick then lets loose a wild pitch that lets Feliz score the winning run.

The Giants had jumped on Brian Lawrence early as J.T. Snow homers to deep left center in a 2-run 1st and they add 2 runs in the 2nd on a wild throw by Lawrence trying to throw out Kirk Rueter on a bunt. The Padres rally and take the lead in the 6th on Mark Loretta's Sac Fly and a 2-run triple by Brian Giles.
