Mike Piazza crushes a pitch from San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman over the right field wall, erasing a 3-2 deficit. John Olerud had led off the 9th with a single and scored on Piazza's homer. Olerud is 3-of-5 including a solo HR off Sterling Hitchcock in the 1st.

New York took a 2-1 lead on Edgardo Alfonzo's RBI double in the 4th and cruised behind Al Leiter's pitching. However, the Padres break out for 2 runs in the 8th with a pair of back-to-back RBI doubles by Tony Gwynn and Phil Nevin.
