Tigers beat the Blue Jays 5-4.

Detroit extends its lead in the AL East to 8 games over Toronto, taking the 1st game of a 3-game series. The Tigers are able to capitalize on some less than stellar defense by the Blue Jays to take a 3-0 lead against Luis Leal. Lloyd Moseby makes a bad break on a sinking liner by Alan Trammell in the 1st, that turns into triple and then run on Kirk Gibson's Sac Fly.

Detroit pushes the lead to 3-0 in the 2nd after poor plays by Willie Upshaw and George Bell allow the Tigers score on a Sac Fly by Chet Lemon and RBI double by Rupert Jones. Toronto gets the equalizer on Dave Collins' 3-run HR off Dave Rozema in the bottom of the 3rd.

Detroit answers back when Lou Whitaker delivers a 2-run HR in the top of the 4th. The Blue Jays then strand 5 runners over the next 3 innings, unable to capitalize on opportunities.
