Tigers make an opening statement with an 8-1 win over the Twins.

Detroit begins its torrid start and championship season on the right foot as Jack Morris quiets Minnesota. Morris, a St. Paul native, improves to 10-0 versus the Twins by striking out 8 and allowing 5 hits and 1 run over 7 innings.

The Tigers strike first with an RBI double by Howard Johnson and run-scoring single by Alan Trammell in the top of the 3rd. Except for the 3rd, Albert Williams makes a solid start for Minnesota before running out of gas in a 3-run 6th.

Darrell Evans goes 3-for-3 with a 3-run HR in his Tigers' debut. Detroit's 1-2 hitters, Lou Whitaker and Trammell combine for 4 hits, 2 walks, 5 runs and 1 RBI.
