Phil Niekro and Cecilio Guante limit Detroit to just 2 hits, a leadoff single by Lou Whitaker that result in a run in the 4th and another leadoff single by John Grubb in the 7th. Guante replaces Niekro after the Grubb single and tosses 3 hitless innings.

Dan Pasqua starts the bottom of the 5th with a solo HR off Walt Terrell to tie the game, and Gary Ward follows with a double and eventually scores on a double play. Willie Randolph leads off the 6th with a double, advances on bunt single by Don Mattingly and then scores on another double play.
