Game Notes

Perfection for David Wells, Yankees in a 4-0 win over the Twins.

Wells tosses the 1st Perfect Game in a regular season game in New York franchise history. Wells strikes out 11 Minnesota batters, becoming just the 2nd Yankee, joining Don Larsen who tossed one in the World Series, to go 27-up, 27-down without a base runner.

Wells' perfection comes easily, with only a hard grounder by Ron Coomer that Chuck Knoblauch knocks down and throws him out, being the only serious threat. Paul O'Neill catches Pat Meares' soft flyball for the final out.

LaTroy Hawkins turns in a solid effort for the Twins, but gives up a run in the 2nd after Bernie Williams doubles, advances on a passed ball and scores on a wild pitch. Williams later adds a solo HR in the 4th. The Yankees add 2 more in the 7th with Williams doubling, and then scoring on Darryl Strawberry's triple. Strawberry later scores.
