New York wins its final game in Tiger Stadium when Tino Martinez starts the 9th with a solo HR off reliever C.J. Nitkowski. Detroit had answered each Yankee score previously as Orlando Hernandez and Jeff Weaver matched strong efforts with both going 8 innings.

New York had scored on a Sac Fly and a groundout, while Detroit came back with an RBI single by Bobby Higginson and an RBI double by Luis Polonia. The Yankees had wasted a bases-loaded situation, getting only a single run off Weaver in the 6th, but Martinez who ended that threat with an inning-ending double play delivers in the end.
