North Carolina christens its top ranking with a narrow escape from Littlejohn Coliseum and 7-14 Clemson. The Tar Heels took control early before the Tigers clawed back, led by reserve Murray Jarman, who scored 13 of his 19 points to pull Clemson within 8 at halftime. The Tigers storm out in the 2nd half and were able to build a 3-point lead before North Carolina rallies with 7 straight points.

Sam Perkins led the Tar Heels with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Jordan adds 24 points.
