Michigan escapes the upset with a late surge by UAB in the 3rd place game of the Great Alaska Shootout. The Blazers made their own 2nd half rally, erasing an 9-point halftime deficit to lead 70-65 before the Wolverines finish strong and finally regain the lead in the final minute, scoring the final 5 points, the last 3 on free throws by Gary Grant in the final 35 seconds.

Grant finishes with 20 points while Glen Rice leads the way with 27 points. Michigan had sprinted to a 13-point lead in the 1st half. However, the Wolverines go cold in the 2nd half and Larry Rembert and Bruce Baker lead a UAB run. Rembert scores 26 points while Baker adds 12, hitting all 5 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers.
