Pirates hang on for a 28-25 win over the Cardinals.

East Carolina escapes a big rally by Louisville when the Cardinals go for it on 4th-and-13 at the Pirates' 34 and fail in the closing minutes, rather than trying a long FG to tie force OT. Louisville had rallied from a 28-10 deficit behind backup QB Mike Watkins.

East Carolina gets a strong performance by David Garrard, who throws for 170 yards and 2 TDs, and runs for another. Garrard's 15-yard TD run in the 2nd quarter gives the Pirates a 21-10 halftime lead, and then he extends the lead in the 3rd quarter with a 12-yard TD pass to Keith Stokes.
