Defense saves the night as the Wildcats beat the Aztecs 23-10 in John Mackovic's debut.

Arizona gets a defensive TD, a safety and 3 turnovers to help make Mackovic victorious in his 1st game as the Wildcats coach. San Diego State had opened a 10-0 lead before the game changes in the 2nd quarter.

Andrae Thurman blocks a punt out of the end zone for Arizona's 1st score, and then Chris Farmer, who rushes for 90 yards, cuts the deficit to 10-8 with a 12-yard TD run. Brandon Nash then picks up a fumble and returns it 57 yards for a score and 16-10 lead late in the 1st half.
