Each time Iowa pulls within striking distance, Michigan State responds, the big one coming on a 100-yard kickoff return by Herb Haygood after the Hawkeyes drew within 21-14 in the 2nd quarter. Haygood also has 9 catches for 119 yards and 1 TD.

Iowa pulls within 28-21 on Ladell Betts' 1-yard TD run before halftime, but the Spartans' defense shuts down Iowa in the 2nd half with Dave Rayner's 22-yard FG expanding the cushion to 31-21 in the 4th quarter. Jeff Smoker throws for 179 yards and 2 TDs for Michigan State.
