Miami withstands a late rally to cap its perfect regular season and earn a berth in the BCS Championship. The Hokies' chance for the upset fades when Ernest Wilford is unable to corral a 2-point conversion following a return of a blocked punt for a score, helping to close a 26-10 deficit in the final minutes. Virginia Tech's fate is sealed when Ed Reed picks off Grant Noel to end the Hokies' last hope.

The Hurricanes had controlled throughout until the final minutes as Clinton Portis rushes for 124 yards and 1 TD and Ken Dorsey throws for 235 yards and 1 TD, despite numerous drops. However, Miami drives repeatedly stall resulting in 4 FGs and leaving the door open for a Tech rally.
