Game Notes

Huskies shock the #3 Cougars 29-26 in 3 OTs to capture the Apple Cup.

John Anderson rebounds from missing 3 straight FG attempts (and a 4th negated by a roughing the kicker penalty) to hit 5 straight, including a game-tying in the final minute of regulation, then 3 more in the OTs as Washington ends Washington State's longshot chances for a National Championship game berth. Anderson hits his 3rd FG of OT, and then the Cougars' hopes end on a controversial 1st play of their possession.

Backup Matt Kegel, who is ineffective after Jason Gesser is knocked out with a broken leg, steps back attempts to throw a screen pass that is batted by Kai Ellis, who then falls on the ball. Officials rule the play a lateral and fumble recovery by Washington ending the game.

The wild finish comes after a big rally by the Huskies in the 4th quarter. Washington State is poised to deliver a knockout blow after taking over on the Huskies 1 following a botched punt snap, but the Cougars settle for a FG by Drew Dunning and 20-10 lead after losing 4 yards in 4 plays.

Washington then comes back when Cody Pickett hits Reggie Williams with a 48-yard pass to set up a 7-yard TD pass to Paul Arnold w/ 3:13 to play. The Huskies get the ball back a final time to drive for the tying FG by Anderson w/ :20 left. The teams trade FGs in the 1st 2 OT sessions before the decisive 3rd OT.
