Irish upset #9 Volunteers 17-13.

Quarterback woes undo Tennessee. Erik Ainge takes over sole possession of the spot due to an injury to Brent Schaeffer the week before and gives the Volunteers a 10-7 lead with a 56-yard TD pass to Cedric Houston.

However, Ainge is injured at the end of the 1st half. His replacement, Rick Clausen tosses an interception that Mike Goolsby returns 26 yards for the go-ahead TD in the 3rd quarter. Notre Dame manages just 216 yards on offense, but its enough for the win.
