Game Notes

Tigers survive a wild finish, win over the Wildcats 38-35 in OT.

Northwestern runs out of chances when a fake FG attempt falls 2 yards short in OT after Auburn had gone up on Wes Byrum's 21-yard FG on its possession in OT. The Tigers had appeared to have the game won several times, but mistakes, penalties and reviews intervene.

Ben Tate, who rushes for 108 yards and 2 TDs, appears to seal Auburn's win with a 7-yard TD run for a 35-21 lead in the 4th quarter. However, in needing to hot dog and celebrate himself, Tate draws a 15-yard penalty, setting up Northwestern in excellent field position. The result is a 2-yard TD run by Mike Kafka that cuts it to 35-27 w/ 3:20 to play.

Following a fumble by Tate, the Wildcats draw even on Kafka's 18-yard TD pass to Sidney Stewart and then a 2-point conversion w/ 1:12 to play. The drive is kept alive by a 15-yard facemask penalty.

Northwestern misses a chance to win it on a FG at the end of regulation, and then fails again for a tying FG in OT, but a roughing the kicker penalty, which gives the Wildcats another chance, but also necessitates the failed trick play because of an injury to the kicker.

Kafka sets NCAA-bowl records with 47 completions and 78 attempts, while throwing for 552 yards and 4 TDs, but he also suffers 5 INTs. Darvin Adams catches 12 passes for 142 yards for Auburn.
