Bob Thomas kicks 3 FGs, and Notre Dame forces 4 turnovers in ending Southern Cal's 23-game unbeaten streak. The Trojans had goes 21-0-2, dating back to the 1971 season before falling in the rain in South Bend.

Anthony Davis puts USC ahead with a 1-yard TD run, but its his only TD on this day, leaving him 5 short of his incredible showing in the 1972 contest. Tom Clements scored on a 1-yard run on a 4th down in the final minute of the 1st half, giving Notre Dame a 13-7 lead.

The Irish open up a 20-7 lead on Eric Penick's 85-yard sprint early in the 3rd quarter. The Trojans answer with a 27-yard TD pass from Pat Haden to Lynn Swann on the next possession, but USC is unable to mount any further challenge.
