Game Notes

#3 Trojans grab a share of the National Championship with a controversial 17-10 win over the #4 Wolverines.

USC benefits from a phantom TD by Charles White in the 2nd quarter. White is credited for a 3-yard TD that lifts the Trojans to a 14-3 lead, while replays show that White fumbled the ball before reaching the 1-yard line. Earlier, Paul McDonald hits Hoby Brenner for a 9-yard TD pass. Frank Jordan later adds a 35-yard FG on the final play of the 1st half.

Michigan is able to close to within a score when Rick Leach hits Roosevelt Smith on a 44-yard TD pass, but the Wolverines attack sputters in ensuing attempts to rally. Leach finishes 10-of-21 for 137 yards, but Michigan's running backs manage just 77 yards on 28 carries. Meanwhile, USC gets 99 yards rushing from White and 90 more yards from Lynn Cain.
