Game Notes

Defense stands up to preserve a 14-7 upset by the #2 Crimson Tide of the #1 Nittany Lions to capture a split national title.

Alabama makes 2 critical defensive stops, led by Don McNeal and Barry Krauss, in the 4th quarter to hold on to the win. McNeal picks off a Chuck Fusina pass in the end zone to stall 1 drive.

After a fumble on the ensuing possession gives the Lions another chance deep in Tide territory, McNeal forces Scott Fitzkee out at the 1, setting up a goalline stand with Krauss making the 4th down stop of Mike Guman to deny Penn State.

Alabama's defense dominates for much of the contest as both offenses struggle, but the Crimson Tide scores late in the 1st half when Jeff Rutledge hits Bruce Bolton with a 30-yard TD pass w/:08 left.

Fusina draws the Lions even with a 17-yard TD pass to Fitzkee, but Alabama immediately answers, going ahead on Major Oglivie's 8-yard TD run. Oglivie also turns in a key tackle when he hauls down Rich Milot on an INT return that appeared destined for a score in the 2nd quarter.

Tony Nathan provides most of the offense, rushing for 127 yards on 21 carries, including a big run to set up the 1st TD.
