Eric Herring catches a deflected pass for a 6-yard TD pass from Terry Elston on 4th-and-goal w/ :12 left to give Houston the winning score. The TD connection caps a 66-yard drive in the closing minutes after Nebraska had taken a 14-10 lead Jeff Quinn's 6-yard TD pass to Jeff Finn w/ 3:56 left.

Elston had come off the bench to lead the Cougars, throwing for 119 yards while adding 87 yards and 1 TD rushing. Elston's 8-yard TD run in the 2nd quarter tied it 7-7, and then Ken Hatfield hit a 41-yard FG in the 4th quarter for a 10-7 lead.

Nebraska never managed to get its vaunted running game on track, managing 136 yards on 41 carries, well below its normal production with Jarvis Redwine totaling just 58 yards on 17 carries.
