Purdue withstands a rally by Missouri that shrinks a 28-12 margin to just 3 following Terry Hill's 1-yard TD run and a successful 2-point conversions with 5:05 to play. However, Purdue is able to chew up most of the remaining time, allowing the Tigers one last possession pinned to their own goalline with a minute to play.

The Boilermakers build their big lead on the strength of 4 TD passes by Mark Herrmann. Herrmann finishes 22-of-28 for 289 yards, hitting Bart Burrell with a pair of TD passes. Burrell sets a Liberty Bowl record with 106 yards receiving.
